5 Battering Rams to CRASH through DREAM WALLS
Yesterday we talked about the 5 WALLS that separate us from our DREAMS.
Today, we will talk about 5 BATTERING RAMS to get through these WALLS… let’s break on through to the other side:
Battering Ram #1: YOUR VISION – The faint outline you have of the dream itself.
When you see a tall mountain from a far-away distance it looks vast, majestic, and just plain BIG! Why? From this distance, you can really only see an outline of the mountain… not a lot of fine detail.
This is probably a lot like your dream… looking at it from afar, the faint outline you can probably see is exciting but also, much like the mountain, very BIG! However, let’s take a brief time-out to appreciate that you even have an outline of what it looks like in the first place.
Brief Time Out of 2 minutes
(Queue the Final Jeopardy music, Maestro.)
Okay, we are back… congratulations again for having an outline of your dream… so exciting. (Note: if you do not have an outline, stay with me… or are already climbing the mountain, way to go, Keener!)
Now, instead of just staying here admiring the dream’s outline, let’s move closer to provide the detail you need to start the ascent.
Battering Ram #2: ACCESS TO OLD PEOPLE (those that have been around longer than you.)
The Internet has more ‘How-To’s’, Opinions, Case Studies, and First Hand Experiential Knowledge on dreams and dream pursuit than you can possibly get through in one lifetime.
On top of that, think about how much more information is contained in your local bookstore and/or library.
Not only is it easy to find this information… it’s also easy to interact with the person who wrote the information through e-mail, blogs, or by phone.
So, there is no possible way you can use lack of information as a DREAM WALL… I do not buy it.
The real issues are:
- Finding the most relevant information and not drowning in the tsunami of web pages, resources, and books that you could find in the search
- Capturing this data in a way that you will retain it
- Effectively use the data when you are actually in action mode
So, the real question is:
- What essential data are you missing?
- What’s the best way to gather and use it?
Battering Ram #3: ACCESS TO CARING PEOPLE
How many Facebook friends does the average person have? 200? 300? 500? So, if I do some quick math, an average person is connected to 300 or so individuals who is connected to another 300 (300 x 300 = 90,000.) Assuming that there is some overlap amongst friends, I am still going to use 50,000 people as your first and second degree connections.
Okay, now… how many of these peeps actually know what your dream is? Could it possibly benefit you for them to know what it is? Here are some benefits I see from letting these 50,000 in on your dream:
- Encouragement/support
- Accountability (get your ass in gear pursuing this, friend!)
- Ideas to refine or execute the Dream
- Resources or connections with other people
Battering Ram #4: WHAT MAKES YOU WEIRD?
Your Dream is much like your weird-ness, quirks, and sense of humour: unique to you and what makes you different from the billions of other people on the earth. So, trying to repress what makes you unique because you are worried about what people will think is a massive mental battle not worth fighting.
Don’t hide your uniqueness from us… so what if you’re ugly, laugh like a seal, spit when you talk, drool when you sleep (me), or have a fondness for midgets? (me, again.) This is what makes YOU, YOU! The more you embrace these quirks, the less you will care about what people think and the more you will do unconventional/controversial/questionable things (like pursue a Dream!)
Battering Ram #5: ME! (and the entire human race)
I want to go out on a limb here and speak for all of humanity:
WE DESPERATELY NEED YOU TO PURSUE YOUR DREAM!!
Why?
More for US than for YOU!
Think of a world where your dream has been pursued:
- What impact will this dream have on the people it affects?
- What impact will this dream have on you (your outlook on life, energy level, aliveness quotient) and the people you come into contact on a day-to-day basis? (your family, friends, neighbours, community)
Now, think of a world where EVERYONE is pursuing and accomplishing their dreams:
- I see positive, optimistic, loving people that care for each other, the community, and the world.
- I see less social problems.
- I see more people saying ‘YES’ or ‘HOW CAN WE DO THIS?’ vs. ‘NO’ and ‘THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN’
- I see less time devoted to thinking about how much life sucks, how tired/drained/busy we are, and how badly we need a vacation/drink/drug/tub of ice cream to make ourselves feel better.
With the image of how you and the world will change in the pursuit/accomplishment of your dream, isn’t it time for you to break through your own WALLS?
